On April 5, 2025, millions of Americans participated in over 1,400 “Hands Off!” demonstrations nationwide, protesting policies attributed to President Donald Trump and his advisor, Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The protests spanned major cities including New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, and Los Angeles. Demonstrators expressed outrage over cuts to social services such as Social Security and Medicaid, and criticized the administration’s transfer of public resources to the wealthy, particularly under Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Despite the scale of the movement, the protests remained largely peaceful, with no arrests recorded by midday Sunday. The White House defended Trump’s stance on protecting social safety nets while accusing Democrats of risking these programs by extending benefits to undocumented immigrants.
